As resident photographer for South Florida’s premier event staffing and needs company, Miami Elite Events, not only do I get to photograph the talent that works for them, but I also get to photograph venues as well. I recently went down to South Beach to photograph the Breakwater Hotel and its rooftop patio area and adjoining suites. Nothing like having VIP access to a beautiful Ocean Drive hotel rooftop all to myself.
The day started out beautiful as I drove down to Miami Beach, but the skies quickly grew dark. I was hoping I had some sun when I began to photograph the Breakwater Hotel, but being half Irish, luck wasn’t on my side that day. As I began to shoot the rooftop patio, the skies grew angrier and the rain began to fall. I tried to shoot fast and get all the required photographs for Miami Elite Events, but I was stifled by the rain and the puddles it left all over the patio floor and furniture.
I moved into the suites to wait out the rain but that was futile as the rain just kept falling on the Breakwater Hotel. There was a slight break in the rain and I was able to grab a few more photos, but the rain had already did its damage. Luckily for me I had taken the exterior shots of the hotel earlier, but I had to wait to get approval to have access to the rooftop.
I moved from the rooftop down to the executive meeting room on the other side of the hotel. I had no idea the hotel was as vast as it was. Like most of the hotels on Ocean Drive, the Breakwater Hotel was decorated with vibrant colors and deco one would expect from an Art Deco hotel. It was pretty cool to see that the original floors were still in place and that a lot of the hotel maintained its original look and feel even if they just remodeled it a few years back.
After I got the necessary shots, I headed out to the sidewalk cafe in front of the hotel and had a nice breakfast and people watched. Ah, the life of a Miami photographer.
