Did you ever get a bad feeling before something even happened or started? I had that feeling when I saw the Savannah State football team warming up for their game against the University of Miami Hurricanes. Those poor kids from Savannah State were too slow and too small to compete with the University of Miami Hurricanes. Hey least they got $350k just to play the Hurricanes.
I knew nothing of Savannah State except their impending doom. I got to the stadium 2 hours prior to kickoff and headed to the media room and grabbed the roster sheet for both teams so I could study who the players were from Savannah State. It really didn’t matter as most of the time the players from Savannah State were on their back and their numbers were basically useless.
The game was unmerciful. The University of Miami had 49 points at half time while Savannah State struggled to maintain their zero points. I would cringe behind my camera as I watched hit after hit being put on the Savannah State players. Those kids took a beating and a lot of them did not keep on ticking.
After halftime and the game about to resume Savannah State wasn’t on the field. I thought they had finally thrown in the white towel and gave up. I mean they really took a beating and I wouldn’t have thought any less of them if they did, but with just a minute to go before kickoff they trotted out and were savagely beaten down by the University of Miami Hurricanes. It was so bad the refs and coached decided to shorten the time in the 4th quarter as well as just let the clock to keep on running so the time would go even quicker. Hopefully the Savannah State team was able to go to South Beach to lick their wounds afterwards. I mean it was only right they got to be happy about something right?
