The Miami Hurricanes vs Georgia Tech game was filled with last minute drama as the Canes came back to win the game with a last minute field goal by kicker Michael Badgley. Of course how can one forget the torrential downpour in the 4th quarter that made the field and surrounding sidelines a gigantic kiddie pool. In theory it was just a typical day in the life of a Miami sports photographer.
With the Hurricanes coming off an emotional high after their victory over their rival, the Florida State Seminoles, it was almost to be expected that they would try to ride their high into this game. That high was quickly erased with a quick Georgia Tech score.
I think as a sports photographer, photographing the Georgia Tech triple option offense is probably the most difficult to photograph. You really never know who has the ball or when the quarterback might shovel pass the ball to someone else. I won’t lie, there were a few times I got confused as to who had the ball. I’m just glad it’s one time a year I have to photograph Georgia Tech.
Another major story was the weather. It was hot for the first half and then the light rain came in right before halftime and it subsided. End of their start of the fourth was another story. It poured like I haven’t seen it pour in a while. The field was soaked, but give credit to the fans. They stayed and some even got soaked.
The last few minutes of the game was just crazy. 4th and 10 with under two minutes and the Hurricanes convert on a great catch by Darrell Langham. Then Michael Badgley was able to hit the go ahead field goal with 5 seconds left. Hard Rock Stadium was loud after that.
Here is a video I posted on my Facebook page of the aftermath of the Hurricanes win over Georgia Tech.
